Most patients want that after knee replacement they should be able to sit cross-legged, squat and kneel down on their knees.IF a patient is able to bend his knee more than 130 degrees, then he is able to sit cross-legged,squat and kneel down on his knees.Their is a new model of knee replacement called the "High-Flex" knee. Different companies which manufacture this new model of knee replacement CLAIM that when this new model is used ONLY then patients can bend their knees more than 120 degrees.I have been using the STANDARD model of knee replacement which is available for last 30 years, and still my patients are able to bend their knees to 130-150 degrees and hence are able to sit cross-legged, squat and kneel down on their knees.Ironically i have been consulted by a number of patients who underwent knee replacement from OTHER surgeons and have been fitted with the new "High-Flex" knee and despite doing all physiotherapy they cannot bend their knees more than 120 degrees and hence cannot sit cross legged.I have been telling all my patients that there is NOTHING 'magical' about this new model of knee replacement.Patients need to understand that buying the new "High-Flex" knee does NOT ensure that they will be able to bend their knees fully after knee replacement.Even after doing all physiotherapy the amount of knee bending after knee replacement will depend on the surgical results of the operating surgeon.

Point (3)-Ability to climb up stairs and descend down stairs WITHOUT support after knee replacement
The 'Gold Standard' to compare the knee replacement results of different surgeons is the American Knee Society Knee Score.Climbing stairs is compared under the Functional Component of the Knee Score.According to this, in case of the best case scenario, a patient after complete recovery of knee replacement should be capable of climbing up stairs and descending down stairs WITHOUT ANY (railing) SUPPORT. Only then are full 50 points awarded to the operating surgeon.In case the result of knee replacement is NOT PERFECT, the patient is likely to have problems descending down stairs more than climbing up stairs.In such situations when a patient is able to climb up stairs without support BUT descends down stairs WITH RAILING SUPPORT, only 40 points are awarded to the operating surgeon.In even less perfect case where the patient is UNABLE to climb and descend stairs WIHTOUT SUPPORT and takes railing support to both climb up and descend down support, only 30 points are awarded to the operating surgeon.
This criteria was developed by the American Knee Society in the 1980's ; which means that the TECHNIQUE AND MODEL OF KNEE REPLACEMENT with which patients can climb up stairs and descend down stairs WITHOUT RAILING SUPPORT are available since the 1980's.
